Back to School Shopping – What do we need?

With September just around the corner, it is time to get to the back-to-school shopping so you and your little ones will be ready to go!  It can sometimes seem like a daunting task and so often, even when we think we’ve got it all together, we inevitably realize we have forgotten some all-important item.  I like to always start with the basics: good shoes, a well chosen backpack, the staple items and then, of course, some fun extras!  Oh, and don’t forget a reusable lunch bag and some handy lunch containers!  Think Green!

Back to School Shopping – What do we need?

Back to School Shopping – What do we need?
Your kids’ little feet are still growing and going to school means they will be on their feet jumping, skipping and doing loads of recess running.  You want to choose a pair of shoes that can stand up to the challenge and provide good support, all day comfort and trendy style, too!  Check ahead to see if your child requires both indoor and outdoor footwear and buy accordingly.

When it comes to choosing a backpack – pick a bag that is the right size for what your little guy or girl needs.  You will need space for just the essentials: a lunch bag, indoor shoes (if required), homework and pencil case, and various other little items like tissues, lip balm, Back to School Shopping – What do we need?hat (or winter gear) etc.  If the back pack is too big, you know it will quickly be filled up with non-essentials (his entire comic book collection…) and your little one’s back with easily grow weary and strained under the weight.  In the same way, if the bag is too small, it just won’t practically serve its purpose and your child may have difficulty keeping track of all his or her loose items.

Next, each child will need a good supply of staples items: think jeans or slacks, T-shirts, children’s socks or leggings, undies, a few good sweaters to layer with, etc.  These staple items will fill in the gaps left from last year’s wardrobe that has been outgrown.  These items are also the ‘meat and potatoes’ of your child’s school wardrobe and will probably account for the largest portion of your back to school budget.

Finally, I think is a fabulous idea to budget for a few extras: a sun hat for the remaining sunny days (and then save it for spring!), a trendy yet durable Back to School Shopping – What do we need? jacket (as the days start to cool off) and then let your kids get involved and pick out some fun accessories.  Accessories include a pencil case, other school supplies, a flowered headband or ball cap, etc.  These extras shouldn’t take up too much of your back to school budget but add lots of trendy flair and fun.

Add lots of encouraging hugs and your kids will be ready for September!  They may even be secretly looking forward to it…

Summer Shoe Shopping with a Flip-Flop Mom

Summer Shoe Shopping with a Flip Flop Mom

You’ve heard of helicopter moms and soccer moms.  Me?  I’m a flip-flop mom.  No, not the kind that can’t make a decision or the type that waffles back and forth on commitments, but rather the mom that lives for warm weather, relaxed attire, and pretty toes.  Summer is almost over and I am on the hunt for the season’s best sales on flip flops before they are all gone until next summer.

Sandals have come a long way in the last few years.  Remember when you were a kid and the only excitement in buying a pair of flip-flops was whether you would go for the red strap or the blue one?  The feet were always that same chunky black and if you left them out in the sun, you could count on scalding the bottoms of your feet.

Boring feet days, be gone.  This summer’s sandal selection comes in strappy, heeled, wedge and metallic and flip-flops for moms and tots alike come bedazzled, bejeweled, patterned, printed, strappy, slinky, and even sexy!  Why, I even chose flip-flops as my fabulous shoe-of-choice when I went to see Sex & the City 2!  Carrie Bradshaw might keel over in her Manolo Blahniks, but I felt fabulous.

When it comes to sandals and flip-flops, my motto is “shop often.”   Afterall, isn’t one of the best part of summer footwear its affordability?   I’m in complete control of my own sandal habit, but when it comes to my daughters, I tend to lose it.  Seriously–zebra print baby flip-flops on little baby toes might be the most delicious thing I have ever seen!  How could we not have them for Grandma’s house?  And for the beach?  Come to think of it, they’d work great for Cousin Liz’s wedding!  See?  It pays to be a flip-flop mom; the versatility of a sandal can’t be beat.  From the beach to the red carpet and Summer Shoe Shopping with a Flip Flop Mom every summer and even early fall occasion in between, sandals just work!

When it comes to vacation packing, I love the fact that for kids and parents alike, a single pair of sandals works with just about everything even the jeans for fall!  What’s more, they take half the space of sneakers and require far less delicacy in packing than heels.  Less luggage?  Lighter weight bags?  That’s a plug for sandals that even my husband can get into.

The last thing I love about being a flip-flop mom in a sandal family?  From the time they were toddlers, my kids have loved how they can “do it all by themselves” when it comes to taking their toddler footwear on and off.  Any item of clothing that saves us time, frees my hands, and fosters self-reliance is worth investing in!

When late Fall comes, I will reluctantly pack away my flip-flops.  I may even take cozy delight in my Uggs for the winter months. But I will always be a flip-flop mom at heart, raising flip-flop kids who know a good sandal when they step into one.  In my opinion flip flops are a necessity for all children’s clothes and even Moms.

Fashion Trend Of The 80’s – No Wait 2010?

The 80s Are Back!

Fashion Trend Of The 80s No Wait 2010?

Some of us look back at the 80s not so fondly. The leather jackets, the big hair, and, of course, Madonna. Well the Material Girl herself has come back to help her daughter drag us back a few decades, whether we want to or not.

Lourdes Leon, Madonna’s oldest daughter, wasn’t even alive during the 80s. But that isn’t stopping her from promoting the new Material Girl line. Lourdes, Madonna, and Macy’s have combined to bring back the decade of big hair for everyone. Or, at least, everyone not old enough to have lived through it the first time. Black leather and big chains were the featured fashions at the sneak peak of the collection by Macy’s.

Oh Madonna, it’s like you never changed.Fashion Trend Of The 80s No Wait 2010?

Fashion Trend Of The 80s No Wait 2010?

Of course, the flashback is not just for teens. Even younger children can get into the look. Trendy toddler clothes are now featuring lace leggings, mini skirts, trendy onesies, and touches of leather. Parents who lived through that era can now dress their toddlers and infants with retro inspired looks.

Fashion Trend Of The 80s No Wait 2010?

This new trend is affecting boys clothes as well. They have brought back the fedora, long shorts, and even animal print clothing.  Oh yeah, how can you forget the skater shoes!

The Material Girl line is due to hit the floors of Macy’s this August, just in time to spark a back to school trend. Certainly, some of the older teachers and principals are going to wonder if they woke up in a time warp as teens show up looking like every 80s movie we know and love. Who knows, maybe they will even bring out some authentic 80s wear they have hidden in the back of the closet.

While the 80s were a fabulous time for movies about heartbreak, love, and parties; I don’t know if we are ready for a resurgence of the fashion yet. At least we have the summer to prepare for it. When August comes, look out. The fashion of 80s is coming back, with it’s biggest trendsetter and her daughter at the lead.

Understanding toddlers….

I saw an interesting article today that might help us get a better understanding of those little minds.  They are so curious, uninhibited, and full of limitless energy.  As parents we try to do the best we can to make sure our children are raised well.  We work hard teaching them to do the right things, say the right things, and act the right way.  Well, based on my findings – RELAX!!!  We don’t have to control everything so much.  Some of those worrisome traits are an inside to the wonders that make your child unique and great!

Below are some characteristics I found and what they mean about your child –

Shy and timid -

These children have proved to be creative.  Another great trait, they won’t be the dare devil.  They are very curious and love to investigate things.  In new situations, they take a little more evaluating before they join in.  So, I guess what we are saying is they will be more likely to "look before they leap!"

Introducing them to new things on a regular basis will help ease some of this shyness.  Don’t feel that you have to shelter them.  Gently encourage them to take small risks.  Don’t try to force it, they will only retract more and become even more fearful.

Drama, Drama, Drama –

Everything seems to be a battle.  Tantrums seem to be an hourly occurrence.  No worries, be patient!  You will never wonder what is going on with this child.  Demonstrating their emotions is not a bad thing, less ulcers later in life.  Determination and exuberance will take them far in life.

Give them a place to act out their emotions.  They love to be the center of attention, they crave it.  So set aside time that is their time to perform.  If the timing is off, let them know.  Maybe save it for a dance recital or magic show, when the time is better.  Make sure you set time aside to show them they are your number one, each day.

Bossy Flossy –

Rest easy, because these children know how to take care of themselves.  They are great in social situations at staying in control of their boundaries.  Assertiveness is a great trait.  In fact, these children grow up to be leaders.

Your job is to direct them towards a more positive approach.  Change the aggressive into assertive.  Next time they try to tell you what to do, simply ask them to say it in a polite tone.  For example – "Mommy play with me, now!"  Remind her to say "I would like for you to play with me." or "Please play with me?"  Important thing to remember is to encourage their wanting to have control.  Let them choose the game – "Do you want to play Chutes and Ladders or Candyland?"  Limit the choices to things that are reasonable and only give two very clear suggestions.  You will still have control, but your little boss will feel that she is the one making the calls.  The more in control she feels, the less she will feel that she has to fight for it.

Our little ones are trying to gain some control over their environment and develop their personalities.  They have many internal wants and needs that haven’t been able to communicate until now.  Patience, love, understanding, and constantly challenging yourself to find the meaning behind the behaviors will help you maintain a better relationship with your toddler.

Take It Outside….

Take It Outside....

Ever notice how much better you feel after a jaunt outside?  Many researchers agree that the brain needs oxygen and fresh air. With as little as an hour outside your attention, outlook, and attitude can change.  Children are no different.

I have found that when my little girl is having a bad day, a quick jaunt outside can change her mood.  When we take our children outside, we don’t have as many rules.  Running is fine, jumping on things – no problem, getting dirty – sure  …….  No wonder they love being outside.  As parents we are able to relax more as well.

Try a scavenger hunt next time you need some outside time……

Objects you will need -

Your child’s favorite toys, imagination, and your child

How to play -

Ask your little one to cover their eyes or turn their backs to you.  Count to 10 together.  Quickly spread their toys around, slightly hidden.  Don’t make things to difficult to find, it will frustrate your little one.  Besides, imagine how unhappy your little one will be if you can’t remember where you hid their favorite toy.

After you have finished hiding their treasures, take their hand and start the hunt.  They will have so much joy in finding their toys.  Don’t end the game there.

Ask them to hide their toys as you cover your eyes and count to 10.  I can just hear the giggles now as they try to stump you with their hiding abilities.

Building Cooperation Through Play

Building Cooperation Through Play

Many Child Psychologists agree that the power struggle for most children begins around the age of 2.  Their world is expanding and their ability to explore is getting better, so they want more.  We as parents start to hear the word "No" from our previously willing toddlers.  This little word has so much power and negativity attached to it.  In an effort to manage our reactions, change your perceptions.

The word "no" from a child is their attempt to express independence.  As far as child development experts are concerned, it is a sign of progress.  Our job as parents is to empower them.  Each time we are presented with a situation, we can teach ways of cooperation.  These skills will set the stage for a more enjoyable future.

Society almost dictates to parents that they should CONTROL their children.  In actuality it is only teaching us to overpower them.  How many of you have seen or been a victim of a temper tantrum from a toddler?  It is funny, because our first reaction is usually negative.  The urge to pick up the child and demand that they stop is overwhelming.  Try this the next time you find yourself in a battle with your toddler:

  • Stop and ask yourself what is the root of the problem.

For example – My toddler wants to practice her new found ability of walking.

  • Determine your goals and think about ways in which your can incorporate your toddler needs into accomplishing the goal.

My goal is to shop for clothes in a mall, my little girl wants to walk around. In an effort to incorporate her needs to walk and my goal to shop, I play hide and seek.  She stays so focused on finding me that she doesn’t get distracted by other objects in the store.  After a few minutes of running around, she is so tired all she wants to do is sit in her stroller content.  Mission accomplished.

  • Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box, be creative, and be flexible.

I will admit that I get disapproving looks from some of the shoppers, but I am having fun playing with my daughter.  Not to mention, she loves to go shopping with me now.

If I had chosen to control my child and make her conform to my wants, she would have collapsed on the floor in a tantrum.  Strapping her into a stroller would have resulted in uncontrollable crying (and disapproving looks again).  I would much rather have someone disapprove of my playing with my daughter than the converse.

Play is the Essence of Life

Play is the Essence of Life

One of my favorite parenting books is Playful Parenting by Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D.  He is a licensed Psychologist specializing in children’s play and play therapy.  In creating this section in our blog, I am hoping to provide a resource of creative ideas to handle the everyday life as a parent.

We all have those days when things seem so overwhelming and we don’t think we can handle anything else.  Those are the days when it is almost impossible to think of productive and creative ways to solve issues.  By coming to this site, we can provide a forum for sharing creative (outside of the box) ideas to make our lives easier.

Each week, I will feature a new creative play activity for newborns and toddlers.  These activities will be focused around developmental building blocks, bonding time, and cooperation.  Some of these ideas will be the miracle cure for your battles and some will only be a building block to another possible solution.  Some days you might even find some stories that will make you smile, as you read about life as a parent.

In Lawrence Cohen’s book he points out the following,

play is children’s way of exploring the world, communicating deep feelings, getting close to those they care about, working through stressful situations, and simply blowing off steam. That’s why "playful parenting" is so important and so successful in building strong, close bonds between parents and children. Through play we join our kids in their world-and help them to:

  • Express and understand complex emotions
  • Break through shyness, anger, and fear
  • Empower themselves and respect diversity
  • Play their way through sibling rivalry
  • Cooperate without power struggles

Nothing in this life is straightforward, so together we can learn ways to teach our children and ourselves how to get along in this crazy life.  Jimmy Buffet describes people best in his song, Fruitcakes, “There is a little bit of fruitcake left in everyone of us”.    Have a very fruitful day!

Playing in the water or in the park, brings a lot of concerns for children.  Newborn skin is so sensitive to the bright sunSpring Has Sprung and Now It Is Time for Fun In The Sun! , especially those without any hair.  Experts suggest keeping a hat on when outside, adults and children alike. The baby hats selection is perfect for newborns and toddlers. Hats allow children to play outside in the fresh air longer, without any damaging effects from the sun. Along with the value of protection, they are great fashion statements.   Fashionistas agree that this line of hats puts fashion back into protective clothes. Gone are the days of white Desitin covered noses, plain white sun bonnets, baseball caps and other equally bland clothing.

Baby feet are just too irresistible; maybe it’s those tiny toes that we eagerly count the moment they are born. Whatever the reason, it’s hard not to tickle those tiny tootsies or count each teeny toe. Only babies can get other people to kiss their feet, which proves the power of those precious piggies. Just like the piggies, baby socks and shoes seem to create squeals of delight from people too. There’s just something too cute about miniature socks and shoes that replicate the trendy styles created for adults. Make something little and it instantly becomes a must-have. While there are a lot of adorable baby outfits and baby clothes for your little love, the shoes or socks can often be the icing on that sweet little look.
